The Olympics are not only a global showcase for the world’s most prolific athletes, but also groundbreaking innovations in sports technology and broadcasting. Let’s spotlight some of the most impactful patents used at the Olympic Games.

The Olympics have introduced several technological advancements, including:

1. Sports Technologies: High-performance athletic gear, such as custom footwear & precision sports equipment.

2. Broadcasting Advancements: Advanced broadcasting techniques, like 360-degree cameras and innovative live-streaming tech.

3. AI Technologies: Artificial intelligence applications in sports analytics and performance monitoring.

Intel x Samsung's AI Invasion

Intel is elevating the Olympics with advanced AI solutions for athletes, coaches, and spectators. Partnering with Samsung, they will employ AI and computer vision to assess training and align athletes with appropriate sports. Their innovations also enhance accessibility through AI-generated 3D models for navigation and voice assistance on smartphones. Additionally, Intel Xeon processors will enable high-quality 8K live streaming with minimal delay, and the Olympic Museum will offer interactive digital displays of significant historical pieces.

The LYCRA Company Brings “Cool” Energy to the Games

The Brazilian Volleyball team's indoor and beach jerseys for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris feature COOLMAX® EcoMade fibre from the LYCRA Company. This innovative material is crafted entirely from recycled textile waste, underscoring the company and Brazil’s continued commitment to sustainability. The vibrant official uniforms, were designed by Body Work, a popular fitness brand.

Fancy Footwork @ the Nike Jam Launch

Nike has designed a specialised shoe for America's breakdancing team, the Nike Jam, which diverges from their usual sports footwear. Although it resembles the Nike Spiridon, it is not intended for running. Key features include a curved sole that allows for ankle flexibility, Braille-like nibs for tactile feedback during moves, and a unique rubber compound around the toe for enhanced sliding. These innovations provide a balance of ground feel and protection, tailored specifically for breaking.

Why Patent Protection Really Matters at a Global Event

Patents play a crucial role in protecting innovations by granting exclusive rights to inventors for a specified period. This legal protection prevents others from making, using, or selling the patented technology without permission, ensuring that the creators can capitalise on their innovations and maintain a competitive edge in the market. Given the Olympics' global media exposure, brands must protect their innovations before they receive such widespread international attention.

Patent protection is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it incentivises innovation by providing inventors with the assurance that their investments in research and development will be rewarded. This protection encourages continuous improvement and technological advancement. Secondly, patents help establish a strong market position by preventing competitors from copying and selling the same technology, thus maintaining the original creator's market share. Thirdly, they can be a valuable asset for companies, attracting investors and increasing the overall value of the business.

To obtain patent protection, inventors must file a patent application with the relevant national intellectual property office. This application must include a detailed description of the invention and claims defining the scope of the patent in addition to any necessary drawings. The patent office then examines the application to ensure it meets the required criteria, such as novelty, inventiveness, and industrial applicability.

Securing patent protection in multiple countries can be a complex and costly process. However, international IP systems like the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), and Organisation Africaine de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OAPI) simplify this process. The ePCT system allows inventors to file a single international patent application, which can then be easily pursued in over 150 member countries. This system provides a unified procedure for filing and initial examination, delaying the need for multiple national applications and reducing upfront costs.

Similarly, ARIPO and OAPI offer regional patent registration for African countries, allowing inventors to obtain protection in multiple member states through a single application. These systems streamline the process, making it more efficient and cost-effective for innovators to secure patents across different markets.

Patent protection is vital for safeguarding innovations, particularly for brands with global exposure, like those participating in the Olympics. By leveraging international IP systems, inventors can efficiently obtain protection in multiple jurisdictions, ensuring their technological advancements remain secure and profitable on a global scale.
